By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Honduran national, Francisco Gilbert Maldonado Hernandez, 31, has been sentenced to six months in prison after being caught living in Belize illegally for a week. Hernandez, who entered the country unlawfully through the banks of the Mopan River in Benque Viejo Del Carmen on August 17, 2024, was apprehended by police on Saturday, August 24, 2024.
Hernandez appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2, where he pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal entry. He was initially fined $1,000 plus a $5.00 court fee, which he was ordered to pay immediately. However, in default of payment, he was sentenced to six months in prison.
In addition to the sentence, the Belize Immigration Department successfully applied for Hernandez to be expelled from the country following the completion of his prison term or payment of the fine. Hernandez is currently serving his sentence at the Belize Central Prison.
