By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 37-year-old Honduran national accused of assaulting a police officer remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison, as delays in psychiatric evaluations continue to affect court proceedings.

Harold Palma, who has been living in Belize since the age of 11, was once again remanded when he appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 earlier this week. His case has been adjourned to April 15, 2026.

Palma has been behind bars for more than two months, but no psychiatric evaluation has been conducted, despite earlier court orders. His case highlights an ongoing issue, as several accused persons believed to be suffering from mental illness remain in custody awaiting evaluation. Reports indicate that Belize currently lacks a psychiatric doctor within the government system to carry out such assessments.

Palma was first brought before the court on January 2, 2026, but could not be formally arraigned after displaying behavior suggesting he was unfit to plead. Magistrates ordered a psychiatric evaluation; however, that assessment has yet to be carried out.

He is accused of aggravated assault upon a police constable following an incident near the Belize City Bus Terminal. According to police, Palma was seen behaving aggressively while holding a knife and threatening persons at the bus stop. When approached by officers, he allegedly pulled the knife on the officer and threatened her, prompting a struggle during which police say they had to use force to disarm him.

Authorities report that Palma was later detained, where he continued to exhibit erratic behavior, including being found naked in his cell and refusing to get dressed. An injection was reportedly administered to calm him before he was taken to court.

Due to his condition, no charge has been formally read to Palma, and no plea has been entered.

His case is among several similar matters currently before the courts. Earlier this week, two other individuals, Kareem Anderson, 27, and Richard Cherrington, also appeared before a magistrate but could not be arraigned for the same reason. Both remain on remand pending psychiatric evaluations.

With no psychiatric specialist currently available in the public system, such cases are expected to face continued delays.
