By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 53-year-old Honduran national accused of threatening a man with a machete on a public street has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being unable to immediately meet bail conditions due to outstanding court fines.

Bartolo Antonio Lopez Ortega, a construction worker of Antelope Street Extension, appeared before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6, where he was charged with aggravated assault with a machete and a knife.

The incident is alleged to have occurred on Friday, February 27, 2026, when Ortega reportedly confronted a 46-year-old welderalong Antelope Street Extension.

According to police, the welder reported that while walking near the Patrick Faber Building around 9:10 p.m., he encountered Ortega standing beside a green pickup truck. The complainant said he attempted to avoid Ortega, whom he believed was intoxicated, but Ortega allegedly retrieved a machete from the vehicle and threatened him, saying, “I will chop you.”

The welder further alleged that Ortega then brandished a knife and continued making threats before he walked away and reported the matter to police.

In court, Ortega pleaded not guilty. With no objection to bail, he was granted bail in the sum of $4,000 plus one surety of the same amount. However, he was required to clear outstanding fines before being able to post bail.

As a result, Ortega was remanded to prison until those fines are paid.

As part of his bail conditions, Ortega must not interfere with the virtual complainant or prosecution witnesses, must stay at least 100 feet away from the complainant, and is required to report to the Raccoon Street Police Station every Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

He is scheduled to return to court on May 12, 2026.
