Honduran man here illegally attempts to escape police custody to avoid deportation but is caught and sent to prison to await imminent deportation home

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old immigration detainee’s brief attempt to flee custody ended abruptly on Monday evening after a court security guard intercepted him at the courthouse entrance, stopping what officials described as a short dash for freedom.

Jeyson Isaias Matute Mejia, a Honduran national, had earlier pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the conditions of a visitor’s permit. He was fined $1,005, in default of six months’ imprisonment. Following his guilty plea, the Belize Immigration Department applied for his removal from the country—an application that was granted by the court.

Despite his grandmother paying the fine shortly thereafter, Mejia remained in custody pending expulsion. Moments later, as he was being processed, Mejia attempted to escape but was stopped at the entrance/exit door by a court security guard, bringing the attempted getaway to an immediate end.

After the incident, Mejia was properly secured and later escorted to the Belize Central Prison, where he is to be held until arrangements for his expulsion are completed.

At his arraignment, Mejia admitted that he failed to obtain an extension to his visitor’s permit. Immigration officials reported that he entered Belize on July 23, 2025, with permission to remain until August 22, 2025, but did not seek an extension, placing him in contravention of the Belize Immigration Act.

Police became involved after Mejia was found allegedly trespassing on private property. Unable to confirm his immigration status, officers contacted immigration authorities, who subsequently took him into custody.
