By Breaking Belize News Staff: Lorenzo Neiges, a 49-year-old Honduran national residing in the Belama Phase 1 area, is serving a one-week sentence at Belize Central Prison for public drinking. Neiges, who was still under the influence when he appeared before the Magistrate in Court #3 this morning, was unable to pay the $30 fine imposed on him.
Neiges was caught drinking an alcoholic beverage in front of La Popular Bakery in Belama on July 16, 2024. He pleaded guilty to the charge of public drinking and was fined $25 plus a $5 court cost. As he could not pay the fine by the end of the day, a warrant was issued for him to serve a one-week imprisonment.
In contrast, another Honduran national, Marcus Gutierrez Larias, 27, of no fixed address in the Belama Phase 4 area, also pleaded guilty to public drinking a few days ago but was unable to pay his fine immediately. He was taken to Belize Central Prison, and the Belize Immigration Department is investigating his legal status and may face deportation.
Neiges, however, has been granted amnesty to live in Belize legally, so he will be released after serving his sentence.
