Honduran man Efrain Palacio remanded to prison for allegedly raping child twice

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 56-year-old man has been remanded to prison without bail after a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) concluded with his committal to the High Court on two counts of rape of a child.

Efrain Dionisio Palacio, a Honduran national residing in the Spanish Town area of Ladyville, appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate on Tuesday afternoon. Following a brief inquiry, the court determined that a prima facie case had been established against him. Palacio is now set to stand trial during the High Court session commencing on October 7, 2026.

The charges stem from an investigation launched early this year. On January 8, 2026, a young student, accompanied by her mother, reported the alleged abuse at the Ladyville Police Station. According to the report, Palacio—who was staying at the household at the time—entered the victim’s bedroom on two separate occasions in February 2023, turned off the lights, and raped her.

Following police investigations and recorded statements, Palacio was arrested and charged. He has remained in custody since January and was remanded back to prison following Tuesday’s hearing.
