By Aaron Humes: The community of San Pedro is reeling after the recent ruling in the tragic death of 32-year-old tour guide Selvin Sealy Jr., which has now been classified as a homicide. A post-mortem examination revealed that Sealy died from restraint asphyxia while in police custody.
On the morning of May 12, Selvin Sealy was detained by police after reportedly displaying erratic behavior near Villa Abrazos. According to eyewitnesses, he had climbed a tree, alleging that he was being chased by a dog. Despite police requests for him to descend, Sealy refused, eventually jumping into a nearby pool, where he reportedly struggled to exit.
Witnesses claim that he slipped multiple times while attempting to get out of the pool, hitting his chin in the process. After police intervened to subdue him, he was taken to the San Pedro police station, but officers soon realized he was unresponsive. Sealy was rushed to the San Pedro Polyclinic, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero confirmed that the Belize Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding Sealy’s death, specifically examining whether the force used during his apprehension was excessive and contributed to the fatal outcome.
The Belize Police Department has yet to issue an official statement regarding the autopsy findings, stating that the results are still being reviewed.
