By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 27-year-old homeless man, Hilberto Cho, remains in jail after being unable to post bail and settling outstanding fines. Cho, a construction worker without a fixed address, appeared in court late Tuesday, facing a theft charge for allegedly taking a blue smart watch valued at $150 from a family friend.
The incident occurred on October 31, 2024, between Miles 9 and 10. According to the allegations, Cho was asked by Terrylee Quilter to pick up a paper and the watch from her relatives. When Cho returned, he only delivered the paper, denying any knowledge of the watch. Initially pleading guilty, Cho later explained he was intoxicated at the time and could not recall being given a watch. This prompted the Magistrate to enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf, and bail was set at $800.
However, Cho was unable to post bail due to an outstanding fine of $3,290, which resulted in a warrant for him to serve prison time in lieu of payment. His next court appearance for the theft charge is scheduled for December 30, 2024.
