By Breaking Belize News Staff: Alejandro Primitipo Gonzalez, a homeless man often seen working near the Swing Bridge in downtown Belize City, was sentenced on Wednesday for damaging a glass display case valued at $2,000, belonging to Jose Rose Azueta.
Gonzalez appeared unrepresented in Court #2, where he was charged with a single count of property damage. The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, when Gonzalez, in a fit of anger, broke the display after a dispute with Azueta.
According to Gonzalez, the altercation stemmed from his attempt to intervene on behalf of a female friend who was having issues with Azueta. When Azueta refused to listen, Gonzalez claimed that the iron he was holding accidentally fell, shattering the glass.
The Senior Magistrate imposed a fine of $650 plus a $5 court fee, giving Gonzalez until December 15, 2024, to pay. Failure to do so will result in a six-month prison sentence. Initially, Gonzalez was remanded to Belize Central Prison due to his lack of remorse and erratic behavior during his court appearance.
Gonzalez, known for making belts and other items near the Swing Bridge, pleaded guilty to the charge.
