Holy Week: Christianity’s most sacred and celebrated week

By Zoila Palma: Holy Week, observed by millions of Christians worldwide, marks the final days of Jesus Christ’s life, leading up to Easter Sunday.

The week begins with Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, and continues through Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, each day reflecting pivotal moments in Christian teachings.

The observance serves as a period of reflection, prayer, and preparation for Easter, celebrating the resurrection of Christ.

On Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026, St. John’s Cathedral in Belize City celebrated Palm Sunday.

“We now share a few moments from today’s services as we remember Christ’s entry into Jerusalem and prepare our hearts for the days ahead. May this sacred week be one of reflection, gratitude, and renewed faith,” the cathedral said.

The origins of Holy Week trace back to early Christianity, when the Church established a liturgical calendar to commemorate key events in the life of Jesus.

Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday have been observed for centuries, with the earliest recorded celebrations appearing in the fourth century in Jerusalem.

Over time, these observances spread across Europe, Latin America, and eventually globally, adapting local customs and traditions.

Holy Week is rich with cultural and religious traditions.

Many communities hold processions reenacting Jesus’ journey to the cross, while special church services feature readings, prayers, and hymns.

Local variations often include traditional foods, decorative palms, and symbolic displays representing the Passion of Christ.

For believers, Holy Week is both a spiritual and communal experience, combining devotion with cultural expression.
