By Aaron Humes: Between Saturday and Monday, police confirmed four fatal road traffic incidents across the Corozal and Cayo Districts.
Four fatalities were reported, while police have arrested and charged three persons and are looking for a fourth.
The first incident happened when there was a collision between Rene Kewell in a red pick-up truck and Jamil Betran, 63, who was on a motorcycle, on the Bullet Tree Road.
Police are holding Kewell on a charge of failing to provide a specimen for analysis, which is against the law. Further charges are expected with Betran’s death.
There were two accidents on Sunday. The first was in St. Matthew’s, Cayo, where a Ford Ranger F-150 pick-up truck and a motorcycle were found extensively damaged. The Ford, driven by one Alberto Romero, was apparently trying to overtake several vehicles and collided with the motorcycle, coming the opposite direction and being driven by 46-year-old Elmer Flores, who succumbed at the scene. Alberto Romero has since been arrested and charged with driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention, causing death by careless conduct and manslaughter by negligence. Police will test a urine specimen to determine if alcohol was a factor.
Later, police visited an area between miles 77 and 78 on the Phillip Goldson Highway. Upon arrival, they saw a bicycle with damage and a man later identified as Gabriel Chable with several injuries. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police later recovered a Toyota four-runner vehicle. A person was detained. He was identified as Carlos Avila and he has now since been arrested and charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention.
Finally, police visited Cristo Rey Road in Cayo where there was a fatal road traffic accident. They saw a motorcycle with damages and at the scene found a person later identified as Justin Vasquez, 31 years old, with several injuries to the head and body. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Information is that a pickup truck had crashed into a lamppost and the wires were hanging across the street when the motorcycle came and he got caught in the wires.
Police are still looking for the driver who fled the scene in this incident.
