By Aaron Humes: In a significant political shift, the New Democratic Party (NDP) has triumphed in the general elections of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, marking the end of a 24-year tenure for the Unity Labour Party (ULP) led by five-term Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, as reported by Reuters and the St Vincent Times.
Dr Godwin Friday, leader of the NDP, expressed his gratitude and determination in a social media post late Thursday night, celebrating the party’s victory and the mandate given by the electorate. This election brings Dr Friday to national leadership, becoming the island’s seventh prime minister since gaining independence in 1979.
The NDP has claimed a majority of 11 parliamentary seats, although eight have been officially declared for them and one, that of Gonsalves, for the ULP, per VC3TV.
