By Zoila Palma: For the first time in Mexico’s 215-year history, a woman has led the country’s iconic Cry of Independence. On Monday night, President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, presided over the Grito de Independencia ceremony in Mexico City’s Zócalo before a crowd of nearly 280,000. She waved the national flag from the balcony of the National Palace after receiving it from female cadets of the Heroic Military College — a historic moment in the annual celebration.
President Sheinbaum also revived a tradition introduced by her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, by mounting an Honor Guard in the Gallery of Presidents. Her tour included a tribute before the portrait of Leona Vicario, honored in 1823 as the “Sweet Mother of the Homeland” and the first woman featured in the National Palace’s main gallery. The night’s festivities continued with fireworks, music, and the President’s powerful call, which honored not only the independence heroes but also indigenous women, migrants, and the dignity of the Mexican people.
Across the country, states also marked the 215th anniversary with local ceremonies. In Chetumal, Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama led celebrations before 120,000 people at the Civic Plaza de la Bandera.
From the balcony of the Government Palace, she echoed the Grito, honoring national independence heroes and heroines, with a special tribute to women and indigenous women. The event featured marching bands, military escorts, and patriotic performances, uniting citizens in a night of national pride.
