Hired to clean but cleaned out the closet: Housekeeper charged for allegedly stealing almost $20K in jewelry on first day of job

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 26-year-old housekeeper is facing a burglary charge after a prominent businesswoman reported over $19,000 in jewelry stolen from her Buttonwood Bay home — on the housekeeper’s very first day of work.

Samara Moody, a resident of Ladyville, appeared before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #2 on Thursday, where she was formally charged with burglary with intent to steal. She pleaded not guilty.

The victim, a 39-year-old woman, told police she specifically instructed Moody not to enter or clean the closets inside her bedroom. Despite this, she later discovered her walk-in closet had been cleaned — and several valuable items were missing.

Among the stolen items were a $6,000 gold bracelet encrusted with diamonds on each link, a 14K gold rosary chain, a Gucci gold watch, a Michael Kors bracelet, and $700 in cash. The total value of the missing items amounts to $19,050.

According to the police report, the burglary took place on Friday, June 20, 2025, during Moody’s first cleaning assignment at the home. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed only the homeowners and Moody entering and exiting the property on that day. No signs of forced entry were found.

Moody reportedly turned herself in to Ladyville Police on Tuesday, July 8, following the issuance of a wanted bulletin. During a subsequent video-recorded interview with investigators, she allegedly confessed to taking the items.

Despite her not guilty plea, Moody was granted bail of $2,000 under strict conditions. She must not contact her former boss or her family, is prohibited from coming within 100 yards of the complainant, and must report to the Ladyville Police Station every Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Moody is due back in court on September 4, 2025.
