By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 27-year-old man who twice broke into the Ladyville Evangelical Primary School within two days has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison.
Hilberto Ramos, an unemployed Belizean of no fixed address, was first arraigned in March on two counts of burglary. On Monday, he changed his not guilty pleas to guilty before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
On the first break-in, Ramos stole classroom supplies and items valued at $122.30, including a JBL Bluetooth speaker, soaps, dishwashing liquid, and cleaning products. The following day, he returned and took a Lasko fan, a wall fan, an extension cord, a T-shirt, and more cleaning supplies, with a total value of $225.
As a first-time offender for burglary, Ramos was sentenced to 3½ years’ imprisonment on each count, but the Magistrate ordered the sentences to run concurrently rather than consecutively. This means he will serve three and a half years instead of seven.
