By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The unemployment rate in Belize for September 2024 stands at a low 2.1%, according to the latest data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
Annia Mejia, Statistician I, highlighted that to be classified as unemployed, individuals must meet three key criteria: they must be without work, actively seeking employment within the last four weeks, and available to work within the next two weeks.
While the national unemployment rate remains low, the data reveals a significant gender disparity.
Female unemployment is more than double that of males, with women experiencing a rate of 3.1%, compared to 1.5% for men.
The highest unemployment rates were observed among individuals with secondary education as their highest level of schooling.
On a positive note, September 2024 saw an increase in employment by 1,711 persons.
Men made up 60.6% of the employed population, with the majority (nearly 50%) of employed individuals falling within the age range of 25 to 44 years old.
Educational attainment among the employed varied, with 33.9% having completed primary education, 26.9% having completed secondary education, and 24.3% having completed tertiary education.
The report also reveals that 70.5% of employed individuals were employees, while 29.1% were self-employed.
The average workweek for employed persons was 39.8 hours, a decrease from the 43.1 hours recorded in September 2023.
Additionally, the average monthly income for employed persons rose to $1,530, marking an increase of $148 compared to the previous year.
