Higher light and water bills push cost of living higher

By Zoila Palma:  Belizeans are paying more for electricity and water, with rising utility costs contributing to a 4.4 percent increase in housing-related expenses in September 2026, according to the latest Consumer Price Index report from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

SIB noted that electricity costs increased due to a rise in the price per kilowatt-hour and the introduction of the Cost of Power Adjustment (COPA) during the year.

These increases added to the financial pressure on households already dealing with higher prices for everyday goods and services.

Water bills also climbed over the 12-month period. A household consuming 4,500 gallons of water per month paid $91.13 in September 2026, compared to $86.38 in September 2025, representing an increase of $4.75.

In addition, home rental costs rose by 2.3 percent compared to September last year.
