By Aaron Humes: The case against prominent attorney Orson Elrington, accused of rape, continues in the High Court, with Justice Nigel Pilgrim presiding over a case management session. Elrington was accompanied by a robust legal team led by his father, Senior Counsel Hubert Elrington, along with attorneys Norman Rodriguez and Michelle Trapp.
During the proceedings, the defense team raised objections regarding what they describe as hearsay evidence, asserting that it should not be admissible in court. The case is set to progress with further written submissions, with the defense expected to file formal objections concerning the hearsay evidence by July 18. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will have until August 5 to respond to these claims.
Elrington has strongly denied any non-consensual interaction with the complainant, maintaining that any alleged contact was consensual in nature. He has opted not to present an alibi as part of his defense strategy. Up to 12 witnesses are slated to testify, including five for the defense. The next hearing is scheduled for September 19, where final disclosures of evidence and rulings on admissibility will be made.
On January 11, 2024, Elrington is accused of raping a young woman at his residence following a night out in Belize City. Elrington was officially charged on March 8. Although initial reports suggested there were allegations involving two women, the DPP has confirmed that the evidence only substantiates a single count of rape.
