High Court dismisses Peter Searle’s appeal in drug conviction case

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The High Court has dismissed the appeal of Peter Searle, bringing an end to his challenge against a 2025 drug-related conviction and sentence.

Searle had been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, a term he has already completed. Despite serving the sentence, he pursued an appeal, arguing that he had been unfairly tried by the Magistrate and seeking to have the record reflect that alleged injustice.

However, in a ruling delivered by Justice Candace Nanton, the court dismissed both his appeal against conviction and sentence.

During the appeal proceedings, Searle, who initially represented himself before later being assisted by attorney Javier Williams, maintained that the trial court erred in its handling of his case. The hearing took place on January 30, 2026.

Justice Nanton explained that under the law, the court could not reverse a sentence that had already been fully served. While acknowledging the limitations of the court’s powers in such circumstances, she noted that even if there were grounds, Searle could not benefit from any outcome after completing his sentence.

Searle, who remains in custody on another matter, has now exhausted his appeal in relation to the drug conviction.
