By Horace Palacio: Tropical Storm Nadine is approaching Belize, prompting a Tropical Storm Warning for areas north of Belize City to the Mexican border. The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds to the country, particularly in central and northern regions.
As of 6:00 AM today, Nadine was located approximately 60 miles east of Belize City, moving westward at 9 mph with sustained winds of 45 mph. The government has issued an Excessive Rainfall Warning, advising residents in northern and central areas to be vigilant and prepared for potential flooding. A Small Craft Warning is also in effect due to gusty winds and rough seas.
Nadine is forecast to make landfall later today, bringing with it the potential for significant rainfall and localized flooding. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions. While the storm is expected to weaken as it moves inland, showers and thunderstorms are likely to persist through Sunday.
The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) has activated its hotline (936) and the Hydrology Unit (822-0667) to provide assistance and information to the public.
