By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Health and Wellness is preparing to join the world in observing World Diabetes Day on November 14.
The Ministry will host Diabetes awareness walks and health fairs.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 422 million adults were living with diabetes in 2014 — a sharp rise from 108 million in 1980. The global prevalence of diabetes has nearly doubled, increasing from 4.7% to 8.5% among adults, largely driven by lifestyle factors such as obesity and physical inactivity.
Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, and lower limb amputation, yet it can be prevented or managed through healthy living, regular check-ups, and proper treatment.
Recognizing the growing threat, the United Nations General Assembly designated November 14 as World Diabetes Day in 2007, urging member states to strengthen national policies for prevention, treatment, and care in line with sustainable health goals.
This year’s theme, “Diabetes Across Life Stages,” highlights that the disease affects people at every age — from childhood to old age — and calls for access to integrated care, supportive environments, and policies that promote health and dignity.
