By Zoila Palma: Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard has indicated that he supports campaign finance legislation but it must be suited for Belize.
“We would love to see campaign finance legislation come up, but we also have to understand that we have to do things that are tailored to our country’s needs. We are a small country, and if you want to model something like the United States, then it is obvious that is a country with millions and millions of people, a different legislative system. But I do support, and this Government, I know this Government supports legislative reforms,” Bernard said.
Minister Bernard said that campaign finance legislation is part of the administration’s manifesto.
“It is part of our manifesto blueprint that we have made a commitment at some point to look at that and bring that forward and have the discussion that needs to be had. As I said though, we have to ensure that whatever legislation is put forward is suited to Belize’s needs and not somebody else’s country’s needs,” he said.
