By Aaron Humes: At the Northern Regional Hospital in Orange Walk Town over the weekend, a 92-year-old patient in severe pain reportedly waited nearly an hour before receiving the necessary medical attention, later dying after the medical staff began to tend to him.
In a statement addressing the issue, Minister of Health Kevin Bernard asserted, “No one should die at any of our hospitals while seeking urgent care,” emphasizing that urgent protocols should always be followed. The Minister highlighted the critical need for compassion and professionalism, especially for elderly patients who represent some of the most vulnerable members of society.
Bernard has instructed the Chief Executive Officer in his Ministry and the Director of Hospital Services to launch a comprehensive investigation into the matter. “If it is confirmed that there was negligence, failure to triage appropriately, or disregard for the patient’s critical condition, there will be consequences,” he stated.
The Minister’s remarks sent a clear message: there will be zero tolerance for any healthcare worker who fails in their duty to serve with dignity and urgency. “Our hospitals exist to provide care and comfort, not frustration and loss,” he noted, assuring the family of the deceased and the public that this Ministry takes the matter with the utmost seriousness.
Minister Bernard promised that the findings from the investigation will lead to immediate corrective actions aimed at ensuring such a tragedy is never repeated.
