By Breaking Belize News Staff: Alifah Elrington, daughter of former Attorney General Sedi Elrington, has confirmed her resignation as Head of the Prosecution Branch, effective at the end of her accumulated leave in July 2025.
Elrington, who has served the Government of Belize for the past six years, said she plans to return to private practice as an attorney-at-law. Speaking to reporters outside the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where she was handling one of her final cases — a gun and ammunition matter involving a Mexican national and four others — Elrington confirmed her departure.
She explained that by the end of December 2024, she had accumulated over 70 days of unused leave, surpassing the 72-day limit after additional days accrued in 2025. This accumulation led to her taking immediate leave earlier this year.
Throughout her tenure, Elrington prosecuted several high-profile and sensitive cases, including the ammunition case against Elmer Nah, his wife Ephephania Caliz, and brother-in-law Manuel Caliz, which ended in acquittal. She also prosecuted a number of police officers and several sexual offense cases.
Among her notable recent cases was the prosecution of former police officer Darrel “Tutsi” Usher, son of Minister Gilroy Usher, who was freed of firearm and ammunition charges in April 2024. Elrington also represented the Crown in the matter involving Arthur Roy Williams, brother of Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, before charges were eventually withdrawn. In 2023, she secured a conviction against former police officer Dean Bellini, who was sentenced to three years for possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply.
Elrington’s departure marks the end of an impactful era for the Prosecution Branch as she transitions back into private legal practice.
