By Aaron Humes: Police have charged 49-year-old Harry Nathaniel Trapp in connection with the December 11 murders of Sarita deliverymen Raynard Garbutt and Robert Crawford. The double murder occurred at Mile 40 on the Hummingbird Highway.
Trapp, a known figure to law enforcement, has a history of violent crime. He was convicted of manslaughter in the 1990s and served over 20 years in prison for killing musician Leela Vernon’s son, David Vernon. Trapp was also involved in a 2007 scandal involving prison corruption, when he made headlines after a police checkpoint intercepted him, along with two other inmates, traveling toward Belize City in the company of a former Deputy Chief of Security from the prison. He got out of a prison about a year ago.
Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch, ACP Hilberto Romero, revealed on Monday that a thorough investigation, involving video camera reviews and follow-up work, led to Trapp’s arrest: “Several video cameras were reviewed. Follow-up work was done. Investigators focused on these leads that we got, and eventually that led to the arrest of [this person]. We established that it was a robbery. They stole the money from the truck…At some point [Garbutt and Crawford] were held up and taken to that area off the highway.” He added that it was not known if Trapp, Garbutt and Crawford knew each other.
Police are continuing their investigation, with potential charges against other individuals pending evidence.
