By Zoila Palma: Belize is celebrating the birthday of Chief Executive Officer Chester Williams, the former COMPOL and longest-serving Commissioner of Police in the nation’s history.
Williams, who dedicated decades of service to the Belize Police Department, is credited with transforming policing through community engagement and leading the country to record its lowest murder rate in two decades.
Williams’ career is distinguished both at home and abroad.
He became the first Belizean Commissioner of Police to serve in regional and international organizations, including as President of the Commission of Chiefs and Directors of Police for Central America, Colombia, Mexico, and the Caribbean (CJDCAMCC), and as Vice President of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police.
His efforts placed the Belize Police Department firmly on the international stage.
The CEO’s personal journey is equally remarkable.
Despite financial challenges and being denied government support while pursuing law studies, Williams persevered with the help of his late mother, who sold her land to ensure he could fulfill his dream.
Others, including Ralph Fonseca, also offered support along the way.
Today, as the CEO in the Ministry of Transport, a lawyer, leader, and inspiration to many, Chester Williams’ story continues to remind Belizeans of the power of determination and resilience.
