By Breaking Belize News Staff: Derrick Leroy Murillo, a 54-year-old handyman from Belize City, is serving a sentence at the Belize Central Prison after being convicted of theft and damage to property. Murillo, also known as “Bubbles,” pleaded guilty in court to stealing $750 worth of perfumes and damaging a glass display case at the Chic store, located inside the Downtown Plaza.

Appearing unrepresented before the Magistrate, Murillo admitted to the charges, stating he broke into the store because he was not being paid adequately for his work. He claimed to have stolen only four perfumes, which he sold to buy food, though the court noted 25 perfumes were reported missing. Murillo also acknowledged damaging the glass case during the break-in.

The Magistrate sentenced Murillo to three months for theft and two months for damage to property, to be served concurrently. Murillo has a history of theft convictions, and the Magistrate pointed out that he had breached the trust placed in him as a handyman for the Plaza. Despite facing two charges, Murillo will serve only three months in prison.

The break-in occurred on October 1, 2024, when the manager of Chic discovered the missing perfumes and damaged glass case. Surveillance footage identified Murillo, leading to his arrest and charges.
