Gwen Lizarraga High School face Wesley, EP Yorke as Central Secondary Schools Sports Association football regular season closes on Monday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Central Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) football regular season closes on Monday with Gwen Lizarraga High School (Gwen Liz) aiming to win both the boys and girls competitions.

In the girls competition, Gwen Liz on Monday face Wesley College with whom they are tied with nine points atop the standings, according to CSSSA Public Relations Officer Richard Staine. Wesley lead with a better goal difference. The match, which will determine the final standings prior to the playoffs, kicks off at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex at 4:00 pm.

Pallotti High School (4 points) and Saint Catherine Academy (3 points) have also qualified to the playoffs.

That match will be followed by the boys competition game between leaders Gwen Liz and last place Edward P. Yorke High School. Gwen Liz have already secured the top spot with 12 points over Wesley (11), Saint John’s College (10), and Sadie Vernon High School (10).

The playoffs kickoff on Wednesday when the number one seeded teams will play the number four in both the boy and girls competition starting at 4:00 pm. The girls game will be played first.

The second and third seeded teams play on Thursday starting at 4:00 pm as well.

The two-leg semifinals close on Saturday when the four return games will be played starting at 9:00 am.

So far, in the regular season, games have been 70 minutes long with 35-minute halves. As of the playoffs, games will be regulation 90 minutes, with 45-minute halves.

Should the series end up in a tie, extra-time and penalty-kick shootouts will determine the winners.
