By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 2025–26 National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) Boys Football Championship, hosted by Wesley College, kicks off Friday at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City, where defending champions Gwen Lizarraga High School open their campaign determined to secure back‑to‑back national titles.
Gwen Liz arrive in strong form after winning their third straight CSSSA crown. Their squad is anchored by tournament standouts Tyrone Linares Jr, the CSSSA MVP and Best Defender; Tyler Gentle, the Most Goals winner; and Shane Vernon, the Best Goalkeeper who delivered a clutch penalty‑shootout performance in the regional final.
They face Orange Walk Technical High School tonight at 8:00 PM in the final match of opening day. OWTHS enter as Northern champions with a high‑energy, pressing style that has troubled opponents all season.
The other boys’ semifinal features Julian Cho Technical High School against Sacred Heart College at 4:00 PM, a clash between the Southern champions’ pace and the Western champions’ disciplined structure.
The winners advance to Saturday’s 2:00 PM National Final, while the losing teams meet in the 10:00 AM third‑place match.
With four regional champions in the mix and Gwen Liz carrying the weight of defending their crown, the boys’ competition promises intensity from the opening whistle.
