By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Central Champions Gwen Lizarraga High School clinched the 2023 National Secondary Schools Boys Basketball Championship defeating Northern Champions San Pedro High School 61-33 in the Final at Sacred Heart College Auditorium in San Ignacio on Saturday.
For the Central Region, the championship is a second in a row as last year their Champions Sadie Vernon Technical High School won the 2022 NSSSA Championship 72-60 over Southern Champions Stann Creek Ecumenical High School at the Punta Gorda Multisports Complex in the tournament hosted by Toledo Community College.
This year, Ecumenical High School had to settle for third place with a 44-37 victory over Western Champions Sacred Heart College. This year was also a drop for Sacred Heart, who last year collected third place with a win over Northern Champions New Hope High School.
On Friday, in the semifinal round of the tournament organized by the National Secondary Schools Sports Association’s, Gwen Liz took out Stann Creek Ecumenical 83-53 stamping their ticket to the Final.
In the other semifinal, San Pedro High beat hosts Sacred Heart College 55-47 earning the second ticket to the Final.
