By Horace Palacio: Guyana officially commenced its two-year tenure on the United Nations Security Council this Tuesday, joining other newly elected members Algeria, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia. These countries were elected in June last year, taking over from Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, and the United Arab Emirates, whose terms concluded on December 31, last year.

According to Caribbean Loop News, the Security Council, which is central to global peacekeeping efforts, consists of five permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States – and ten non-permanent members. These non-permanent members are chosen to provide regional balance and are elected by the General Assembly of all 193 UN Member States.

France currently presides over the Security Council for January, with key issues such as the Israel-Palestine crisis and the war in Gaza expected to remain at the forefront of discussions.

Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, marked the beginning of the country’s term by installing the Guyana flag alongside those of other Security Council members outside the Council chambers. Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett emphasized Guyana’s commitment to addressing complex global challenges proactively and comprehensively, with a focus on conflict prevention and resolution.

Underlining a people-centered approach, Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett highlighted the importance of involving women and youth in peacebuilding processes. She recognized the detrimental impact of conflict on poverty and underdevelopment, asserting that addressing these issues is crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The theme of Guyana’s participation in the Security Council is “Partnering for Peace and Prosperity”. The country’s tenure is set to prioritize critical global issues such as climate change, food insecurity, peacebuilding, women, peace and security, the protection of children in armed conflict, and youth engagement in peace processes.

In alignment with these priorities, Guyana has endorsed the “Joint Pledge on Climate, Peace, and Security” and joined the “Statement of Shared Commitments on Women, Peace, and Security”. This term marks Guyana’s third tenure on the Council, following previous terms in 1975-1976 and 1982-1983, showcasing its ongoing commitment to global peace and multilateralism.
