By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A Sunday evening shooting has left a 29-year-old construction worker dead, marking another violent incident in the growing spate of gun violence affecting communities.
Police report that around 5:45 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2026, they received information of shots fired on Yellow Tail Street. Officers from Ladyville Criminal Investigations Branch, along with relief and Special Branch personnel, responded to the scene at the Jew Apartment Complex.
Upon arrival, police were informed that Elroy Bainton, a Belizean construction worker and resident of Yellow Tail Street, had already been rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital by police after sustaining gunshot injuries.
Initial investigations revealed that Bainton was standing along the street near the apartment complex when a masked male assailant approached and opened fire. After being shot, Bainton reportedly ran into the yard of the apartment complex, jumped a fence, and collapsed beneath a green wooden structure nearby.
Despite being transported for emergency medical attention, Bainton was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. by medical personnel.
Police processed the scene and recovered several expended shells and one 9mm live round, along with blood swabs. The area was canvassed, but investigators say no useful information was obtained at this stage.
The body remains at the KHMH morgue awaiting a post-mortem examination as investigations continue.
