By Horace Palacio: A Saturday night shooting in Belize City claimed the life of a 24-year-old fisherman and left a woman in critical condition, police said.

Mark Waight, also known as “Peto,” was found partially submerged in a drain near a residence on Central American Boulevard shortly after 10:00 p.m. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

A second victim, 33-year-old Francine Herbert, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), where she remains in critical condition, authorities added.

Residents reported hearing more than a dozen gunshots before police arrived. Investigators believe the incident stemmed from an argument among a group of people gathered outside the house.

“Preliminary inquiries suggest the altercation escalated, resulting in shots being fired,” a police spokesperson said.

Officers recovered several expended shell casings from the scene and are reviewing surveillance footage from the area. A 22-year-old construction worker has been detained for questioning as the investigation continues.
