By Breaking Belize News Staff: 20-year-old Jadaey Williams, who was only 18 when she was charged with keeping a prohibited firearm and ammunition, is free after the charges were struck out for want of prosecution.

The case dates back to Halloween night, October 31, 2023, when police on Wilson Street allegedly found Williams in possession of a black Hi-Point .45 caliber pistol loaded with three live rounds. Despite being in a group of four, Williams was the only one charged after officers searched her school bag and reportedly discovered the weapon.

Williams, who is a relative of former Commissioner of Police Chester Clyde Williams, maintained her innocence throughout the proceedings. Her attorney, John Nembhard, challenged inconsistencies in the state’s case—most notably that the arresting officer testified the firearm bore no serial number, while the Forensic Services report stated otherwise.

During the trial, Nembhard objected to the opening of the gun box in court, arguing that if the firearm had no serial number, it could not be the same weapon tested by the lab. Conversely, if it had a number, then it was not the firearm allegedly taken from Williams.

The trial began earlier this month, but on Friday, when the matter was set to continue, the female arresting officer—who had already testified—failed to appear despite being summoned by the court. The prosecutor confirmed the summons was issued but admitted the officer, now posted in Independence Village, did not attend.

With the crown’s main witness absent, the magistrate struck out the case for want of prosecution.

Williams, now a young mother of a baby girl, expressed relief that the charges—hanging over her head for nearly two years—are finally behind her.

Despite her family ties, the former COMPOL did not intervene in the case, and Williams faced the full weight of prosecution until its collapse.
