By Breaking Belize News Staff: Head Supervisor of Priority Security, Akeem Elijah Tench, is out on bail after one of two criminal charges against him was dropped during his latest court appearance on Monday morning.
Tench was transported from the Belize Central Prison to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he appeared before Chief Magistrate Deborah Rogers. At the hearing, the charge of keeping an unlicensed firearm was formally withdrawn by police following further investigation.
According to the prosecution, it was confirmed that Tench was on duty as a licensed security officer at the time of the incident. The firearm in question was legally assigned to him by his employer, Priority Security, which holds a valid license for the weapon. As such, it could not be legally argued that Tench was in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
That leaves Tench facing only one remaining charge — discharging a firearm in public. He maintains a not guilty plea.
Tench’s attorney had already secured Supreme Court bail on Friday, May 9, and following Monday’s court proceedings, he was officially released around midday, once he provided proof of his bail approval.
The charge stems from a May 5, 2025, incident, when Tench reportedly discharged his firearm outside his home after receiving a distress call from his daughter. Tench told the court that two men were attempting to break into their house and were seen fleeing down the stairs when he arrived. He claimed he fired into the air to scare them off.
Tench’s daughter has not yet given a statement to police regarding the alleged attempted break-in.
Tench remains free on bail while awaiting trial.
