By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 29-year-old man from Guinea Grass Village is recovering after surviving a frightening crocodile attack while swimming at the New River Park in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Leomar Narvallez said he was in the popular local bathing area when a crocodile suddenly clamped onto his head, leaving him fighting for his life underwater.
Narvallez recalled the terrifying moment, saying, “I was in the river and I was swimming, and that’s when I felt like something grabbed me in my head.” He said the animal shook his head twice as he remained trapped in its jaws, adding that the attack happened so quickly that he had little time to react.
Rather than panic, Narvallez said he fought back and attempted to free himself from the crocodile. “I put my hand on top of my head when I felt the crocodile’s teeth, and I tried to make my head lose from his mouth,” he said.
He estimated that his head remained inside the crocodile’s mouth for about six seconds and that the entire struggle lasted less than 20 seconds.
Narvallez told News 5 that he eventually grabbed onto a tyre hanging from a rope and pulled himself from the water, while his friends initially did not realize how serious the situation was.
“The only thing that I could have done for, like, five-six seconds is to fight against it so it let go of my head,” he said.
The injured man remained hanging onto the tyre for approximately 10 minutes while bleeding from his head before relatives living near the park arrived in a canoe and pulled him to safety.
He was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital, where he received about 28 stitches to his head and was released the same day; he also suffered bruising to his hands but no other major injuries.
Now recovering at home, Narvallez is warning residents, particularly parents, to keep children away from the area until the crocodile can be located.
