By Zoila Palma: Today, Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arevalo commented on the recent incidents at the Sarstoon with the Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF) and the Belize Defence Force (BDF).
On September 10, 2025, members of the GAF illegally hoisted a Guatemalan flag on the Sarstoon Island after being advised by the BDF that their actions violated international law.
President Arevalo said that the incidents are as a result of the lack of definition of the territorial, island, and maritime dispute between the two countries, which is currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
“The fact is that there is still no definition of the territorial dispute. The good thing is that both countries have agreed that this will be resolved by the ICJ; the phases of presenting written arguments have been completed. It’s a years-long process; we are waiting for the process of the verbal presentation stage to be finalized,” he said.
However, Arevalo said that he doesn’t know why Belize escalated the tone of the incidents.
“We don’t fully understand why Belize raised the tone in this case, but we must be clear that we will not allow it to become a bigger problem, because we are already in a formal conflict resolution process,” Arévalo added.
