By Horace Palacio: During his debut address at the United Nations General Assembly, Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo expressed a commitment to peacefully resolve the long-standing territorial dispute with Belize. He reassured the international community of Guatemala’s dedication to abiding by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision regarding the insular and maritime borders between the two nations.
“By opting for dialogue and international legal mechanisms, we have demonstrated that peaceful means and respect for multilateral institutions are the most effective way to resolve disputes,” Arévalo emphasized. His remarks were seen as a positive signal of cooperation in the region, as both countries await the final ruling from the ICJ.
Arévalo further highlighted that the process will ensure a “just and lasting solution” that respects the dignity and rights of both nations, setting a precedent for peaceful conflict resolution in the region. He underlined the importance of faith in international law and institutions, with the hope that the ICJ ruling will serve as a lasting example for the world.
