As Belizeans gathered to celebrate the strives of our country, Guatemala’s social media pages including Melchor de Mencos, Peten and Noticias de Peten pages mocked Belize’s Independence.
Noticias de Peten posted, “Hoy Belice celebra su “independencia” pero no olvidemos que esa tierra era guatemalteca. ¿Independencia o despojo?”
Today Belize celebrates its “Independence” but let’s not forget that that land used to be Guatemalan. Independence or dispossession?
In recent days, there has been heightened tensions in the Sarstoon following several confrontations by the Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF).
Belize has also formally protested the illegal hoisting of a Guatemalan flag on the island on September 10, 2025.
