By Breaking Belize News Staff: Julio Lopez, a Guatemalan national, has been sentenced to 4 years in prison for using deadly means of harm with intent to cause grievous harm. With deductions for his early guilty plea, Lopez will serve 2 years and 8 months.
Lopez, 42, attacked Nerie Barrios from behind with a machete during a wake in Lords Bank Village on November 7, 2021, causing severe head injuries and a fractured skull. Despite initially facing attempted murder charges, Lopez pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.
Justice Nigel Pilgrim considered the severity of the crime, noting the unprovoked and senseless nature of the attack, while also acknowledging Lopez’s remorse and potential for rehabilitation. Lopez’s sentence was backdated to May 9, 2022.
Lopez was represented by attorney Ronell Gonzalez, with Senior Crown Counsel Sheneiza Smith prosecuting the case.
