By Aaron Humes: Police have arrested 30-year-old Juan Carlos Estrada Prado, a Guatemalan national from Santa Cruz village. Prado faces multiple charges, including manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving without due care and attention, failing to report an accident, and neglecting to stop and render aid. It comes after 48-year-old Police Special Constable, Marcos Acal lost his life in a traffic accident that occurred around 7:25 p.m. on Friday night, between miles 30 and 31.
Emergency responders discovered Acal’s lifeless body on the pavement’s shoulder, with a damaged red and black Skygo 125cc motorcycle lying nearby, showing significant damage to its left side. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at Southern Regional Hospital shortly before 8:30 p.m.
According to Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Stacy Smith, “Intelligence was obtained in relation to a vehicle of interest that was seen in the Punta Gorda jurisdiction, and that information was relayed to police officers in Punta Gorda. The officers intercepted a Hino Band pickup truck at the dump in Punta Gorda, and on board that vehicle were Prado as well as two other male persons, and an inspection of that vehicle showed signs of damage and apparent blood.”
The Belize Police Department has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Constable Acal, as eulogized by ASP Smith: “The Belize Police Department mourns the loss of Acal. Acal was a special constable for 14 years, where he gave very dedicated and exemplary service.”
