By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Guatemalan construction worker who allegedly borrowed a co-worker’s bicycle and never returned it has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being denied bail in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
Victor Garcia, 23, a Guatemalan national residing on Antelope Street Extension, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #6 on Wednesday where he was read a single charge of theft. He is accused of dishonestly appropriating a black 24-inch female bicycle valued at $100, property of a fellow Guatemalan national.
Garcia pleaded not guilty, but bail was denied after the Police Prosecutor objected on the grounds that he could not provide a fixed address and due to concerns related to his nationality. He was remanded until January 12, 2026.
According to the report filed by the bicycle owner, he met Garcia—who he only knew as “Javier”—for just one day on a construction site. On November 3, 2025, Garcia allegedly asked to borrow $5 to buy tacos and requested the use of his bicycle to go get them. The bicycle owner agreed, but Garcia never returned.
For weeks the bicycle remained missing, until November 24 around 7:00 p.m., when one of the owner’s co-workers spotted Garcia walking past their worksite. The workers confronted him, detained him, and called police.
Officers escorted both men to the Precinct 1 Police Station, where Garcia’s true identity was confirmed and he was formally charged with theft.
Garcia is expected to return to court in January as the matter continues.
