Guatemalan businessman charged for prohibited 40-cal ammunition in Hilux

By Aaron Humes: Police and Customs personnel chased down two Guatemalan businessmen in Cayo last Friday and came upon prohibited ammunition in their black Toyota Hilux.

Nestor Galdamez, 50, and Eduardo Galdamez, 30, say they are legitimate businessmen engaged in buying and reselling Belizean chicken in Guatemala, and are licensed to carry firearms and ammunition in Guatemala; however, according to police, the ammunition found in their vehicle is prohibited in Belize, and it should have been declared at the Benque Viejo Police Station.

ASP Stacy Smith, Staff Officer, explains: “These arrests follow a search that was conducted by MIU personnel on Friday, January 9, at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Hydro Road in the Coyo District. The MIU personnel reported that they were on mobile patrol in the area when their attention was drawn to a pursuit that was being conducted by Customs personnel who were following a black in color Hilux pickup truck. When the vehicle was intercepted, and the search was conducted, found therein were the fourteen live rounds of [40-caliber] ammunition.”

Customs authorities are pursuing their own charges in relation to the failure to declare.
