Guatemalan Army says it will “continue to permanently patrol the Sarstoon”

Posted: Saturday, September 13, 2025. 2:08 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma:  Today, the Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) visited the Sarstoon and were escorted by members of the BDF and the Belize Coast Guard.

The BTV, BDF and Coast Guard boats met 3 vessels belonging to the Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF).

This incident comes just days after the GAF illegally installed a Guatemalan flag on the Sarstoon Island.

During that exchange, our BDF informed them that the flag would be taken down since it was illegally placed.

In addition, the Government of Belize formally protested the actions of the GAF.

Following the incident, the Guatemalan Army told Prensa Libre that they will continue to permanently exercise their “constitutional functions.”

“Regarding the incident involving a Belizean vessel on the Sarstoon River, I inform you that these events are not new, but have been repeated over the years, precisely because a definitive solution has not yet been found to the territorial, insular, and maritime dispute before the International Court of Justice,” the GAF said.

“Guatemala, in the free exercise of its sovereignty and through the Guatemalan Army, will continue to permanently exercise its constitutional functions, in accordance with the law and previously established protocols, by patrolling the Sarstoon River, as it always has,” the Army stated.

The statement from the GAF also affirmed “unwavering commitment to the Constitution, the protection of territorial integrity, and the defense of sovereignty, ensuring the permanent presence of the State in the region and acting in accordance with the law.”
