By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Guatemala and El Salvador earned hard-fought victories on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the VII AFECAVOL U23 Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship, climbing the standings at the Belize City Civic Center as leaders Belize sat out the day’s fixtures.
Guatemala edged Honduras in a five-set thriller that stretched the nerves of both squads and enthralled the Civic Center crowd. After taking the first set comfortably, Guatemala were forced to regroup after dropping the second and third sets. They rallied with poise, ultimately clinching the contest 3–2 (25–11, 25–27, 22–25, 28–26, 15–13), a result that boosted their record to 2–0.
Outside hitter María Santa Cruz led Guatemala with 24 points, including an impressive 10 service aces, 12 kills, and two blocks. She was supported by Dulce Trigueño with 17 points and Annika Graniolati who chipped in with 10. Guatemala dominated from the service line, recording a 16–6 edge over Honduras, and narrowly led in attacks 53–51.
Honduras remained competitive throughout, excelling at the net with a 13–10 advantage in blocks. Sasha Kawas posted 22 points, Dazly Durán added 15, and Shantte Siliezar contributed 13, pushing the match into its decisive fifth frame.

Later in the evening, El Salvador completed a dramatic comeback against Panama, rallying from two sets down to take the match 3–2 (8–25, 15–25, 25–23, 25–20, 15–8). The match featured a marathon rally in the fifth set with 81 touches on the penultimate point, a moment that summed up El Salvador’s grit and persistence.
Despite trailing statistically in attacks (36–43), blocks (7–10), and service points (6–10), El Salvador capitalised on Panama’s 40 unforced errors and stayed composed in key moments. Allison Méndez and Paola Juárez both finished with 16 points, while Panama’s effort was led by Janeth Fuentes (16), Karla Alonso (15), and Sofía Centella (11).
With Tuesday’s results, Guatemala remain unbeaten, El Salvador earn their first win of the tournament, and Panama fall to 0–3. Belize, who currently top the standings with a 2–0 record, did not play and return to action on Wednesday against Honduras.
The championship continues Wednesday with Guatemala facing Panama at 5:30 pm and Belize returning to action against Honduras at 8:00 pm. The outcome of Belize’s match will be pivotal in maintaining their lead ahead of Thursday’s showdown with Guatemala.
