The Belize Tax Service has announced the return of the GST-Free Days School Supplies initiative, under which eligible school supplies will be exempt from the twelve-and-a-half percent General Sales Tax on two designated days: Saturday, August 15, and Saturday, August 29, 2026.
This marks the second consecutive year the Government of Belize has offered the back-to-school tax break, and returning shoppers will notice a significant change. As Greater Belize Media reported, last year’s exemption ran over two full weekends, Friday through Sunday, giving parents six days in total to purchase qualifying supplies tax free. This year, the relief has been reduced to just the two Saturdays.
The rules of the programme remain focused. The GST exemption applies only to approved school-related items, including supplies and other educational materials, and businesses participating in the initiative are expected to clearly identify which products qualify. Shoppers should look for those markings in stores, and note that general merchandise outside the approved list will still carry the tax.
For families, the practical math is worth doing. On a sizeable back-to-school haul, twelve and a half percent is real money saved, enough to cover an extra set of notebooks or a pair of shoes, and with the whole country’s parents funnelled into two Saturdays instead of six days, early planning and early arrival will beat the crowds.
The Belize Tax Service says further details are coming, so families should stay tuned and start planning their back-to-school shopping today.
