Greening Belize Initiative: Julian Cho Society through Toledo Alcaldes Association has distributed more than 5000 trees

By Zoila Palma:  Earlier this year, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Solid Waste Management launched the Greening Belize Initiative, a national forest restoration and climate resilience programme aimed at planting one million trees across Belize by 2035.

Following the devastating forest fires of 2024 and in 2025 alone, the Julian Cho Society, through the Toledo Alcaldes Association, has distributed more than 5000 trees of various species to Maya communities in an effort to restore forests and forest-based food systems that sustain livelihoods.

“This initiative strengthens our efforts to continue regenerating and restoring our forests as we build climate-resilient communities,” the Maya Leaders of Southern Belize said.

The initiative is spearheaded by the Belize Forest Department and aligns with Belize’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), the National Landscape Restoration Strategy, and international commitments such as the Bonn Challenge.
