By Zoila Palma: Environmental partners from Belize, Guatemala and Mexico are strengthening trinational cooperation to advance conservation efforts within the Great Maya Forest Biocultural Corridor.
The discussions are taking place in Mérida, Yucatán, where representatives are working to advance the Corridor Action Plan while identifying concrete conservation actions, financing opportunities and partnerships aimed at protecting biodiversity, maintaining ecological connectivity and promoting sustainable development.
Representing Belize are Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management Orlando Habet, Acting Chief Forest Officer Yanira Pop and Forest Department representative Victoria Chi.
The Belize delegation is contributing to regional discussions while reaffirming the country’s commitment to protecting its natural and cultural heritage.
The collaboration comes as Mesoamerica works toward the global 30×30 conservation target, which seeks to protect 30 percent of land and waters by 2030.
The Great Maya Forest highlights the importance of conservation efforts that extend beyond national borders and incorporate protected areas, Indigenous territories, OECMs, local communities and sustainable livelihoods.
The trinational cooperation builds on the Calakmul Declaration of 2025, through which Belize, Guatemala and Mexico established a shared vision for the conservation of the Great Maya Forest. The current discussions are focused on translating that vision into practical actions and stronger regional partnerships.
With its vast forests and interconnected ecosystems spanning the three countries, the Great Maya Forest represents a shared natural and cultural heritage.
