By Aaron Humes: The home of an elderly woman in Rio Bravo Crescent was targeted in a shooting shortly after the murder of resident Mark Usher. The incident unfolded on Sunday, March 9, just hours after Usher was shot dead on Faber’s Road, sparking concern about escalating gang-related tensions in the area.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hilberto Romero, officers responded to calls reporting gunfire in the neighborhood. Upon arrival, they encountered Ivonne Elis, the home’s occupant, who recounted the harrowing experience.

“I was in front of my house when I noticed a white van slow down nearby,” Elis told police, as recounted by ACP Romero. “Suddenly, I saw a man pull out a gun and fire several shots in my direction. I quickly took cover and called the police.”

Fortunately, Elis escaped unharmed, but the incident has raised alarm among residents, who fear for their safety amidst the gang violence gripping the city. ACP Romero confirmed that law enforcement is currently investigating the shooting and is actively searching for the suspect’s vehicle.

“We are trying to determine who the intended target might have been,” Romero added. “This incident highlights the need for increased community vigilance and collaboration with the police. We urge anyone with information to come forward.”

The ongoing violence has left many in the community on edge, as they grapple with the repercussions of gang rivalries that continue to plague Belize City. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may lead to an arrest and help restore peace to the area.
