By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 65-year-old Belize City man has been sentenced to three months in prison after pleading guilty to a drug trafficking charge, adding another conviction to a criminal record that already included five previous drug offenses.

Orlando Anthony Fisher, an unemployed resident of Kelly Street, appeared before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 26, charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply after police allegedly found him carrying 61 grams of marijuana.

According to court reports, Fisher was detained around midday on Friday, October 23, while police officers were conducting patrols in the Back-A-Town area of Belize City.

Police were patrolling near Lindos Alley when they reportedly observed Fisher walking along East Collet Canal. Police claimed he appeared uneasy upon noticing their presence.

Officers conducted a search and allegedly discovered a transparent green plastic bag containing suspected cannabis concealed in the front of his pants. The substance was subsequently weighed and reportedly amounted to 61 grams.

Under Belize’s Misuse of Drugs Act, possession of more than 60 grams of cannabis carries a legal presumption of intent to supply, unless the contrary is proven.

Fisher pleaded guilty to the charge. However, the court considered his extensive history of drug-related offenses, including five previous convictions, before imposing a custodial sentence of three months.

He was subsequently sent to prison to begin serving his sentence.
